Luigi Mangione indicted on federal charges in UnitedHealthcare CEO murder case

Luigi Mangione, 26, has been indicted on federal charges for the December 4, 2024, killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel.

The indictment includes two counts of stalking, one firearms offense, and murder through the use of a firearm, making Mangione eligible for the death penalty if convicted.

Attorney General Pam Bondi has directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty, citing the murder as a “premeditated, cold-blooded assassination” and an “act of political violence.” Mangione’s defense team argues that Bondi’s statements have prejudiced the grand jury process and are politically motivated.

Surveillance footage reportedly captured the masked gunman shooting Thompson, with bullets bearing inscriptions criticizing insurance industry practices.

Mangione was arrested five days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania, allegedly in possession of the murder weapon and writings expressing hostility toward the health insurance sector.

Mangione, an Ivy League graduate from a wealthy Maryland family, has pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges. He is currently detained in a Brooklyn federal facility.

The case has stirred public debate over healthcare access and costs, with some viewing Mangione’s actions as highlighting issues within the U.S. healthcare system
