Pindi declares monsoon season from June 15

RAWALPINDI:

The monsoon flood season has been declared from June 15 to August 15 in Rawalpindi.

Starting May 1, the annual cleaning of the 22-kilometre-long Nullah Leh and 13 major stormwater drains will begin.

A total of Rs140 million has been requested for this operation. WASA has asked the government for Rs80 million for the cleaning and deepening of its 11-kilometre stretch of Nullah Leh, while Rs60 million has been sought for the remaining storm drains.

Last year, funds were released in similar proportion, but the Punjab government has rejected this year’s request for increased funding. Authorities argued that fuel prices, heavy machinery rental, and labor costs have all risen, but the government did not accept this justification.

Nullah Leh has caused severe flooding in Rawalpindi every monsoon for the past 50 years.

Of its total length, 11 kilometres pass through the city while the rest lies within the Rawalpindi and Chaklala cantonment areas.
