Stalls, markets cleared before Eidul Azha

ISLAMABAD:

The Islamabad district administration on Monday launched a comprehensive crackdown against street vendors, illegal cattle markets, unauthorised stalls, and wall chalking as part of efforts to maintain cleanliness and order in the federal capital ahead of Eidul Azha.

According to a spokesperson for the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration, strict action is being taken against encroachments and unlawful activities that disrupt traffic and tarnish the city’s appearance. The initiative aims to preserve the beauty of Islamabad during the festive season.

During the operation, dozens of roadside stalls and vendor carts were removed from busy roads and commercial hubs. Over 33 pushcarts were confiscated from multiple locations, including Srinagar Highway, Murree Road, Sector F-7, and Aabpara Market—areas frequently congested due to illegal vending.

Temporary and unauthorized cattle markets, which had sprung up in anticipation of Eidul Azha, were also dismantled for causing severe traffic jams and public inconvenience. A major illegal cattle market at Iran Avenue was shut down, and two individuals were arrested for operating it without proper authorisation.

In addition, Assistant Commissioners took decisive action against wall chalking, removing unauthorised graffiti, posters, and banners from public walls. Six individuals were arrested for defacing public property, as part of a broader campaign to enhance the city’s visual appeal.

The crackdown also extended to unauthorised beverage stalls—especially those selling sodas and plum drinks—set up along roadsides, blocking pedestrian and vehicle movement. Twelve stall owners were arrested, and their setups were removed.

Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to a clean and orderly city. “Unauthorised stalls, including roadside drink stands, will not be tolerated. These operations will continue with full force and without discrimination,” he stated.

Highlighting the importance of public cooperation, DC Memon added, “The beauty and order of Islamabad are top priorities. No compromise will be made when it comes to the city’s cleanliness, safety, and traffic flow.”

Operations were conducted across several key locations where encroachments had become persistent problems. On the Srinagar Highway and Murree Road—two of the city’s main arteries—numerous illegal carts were removed, easing congestion and improving pedestrian access.

Similar enforcement actions were carried out in Sector F-7 and Aabpara Market, where vendors had blocked sidewalks and roadways, creating obstacles for shoppers and commuters. The removal of these obstructions helped restore normal traffic flow and improved public safety.

Officials also emphasised the ongoing nature of the campaign. “This is not a one-time effort,” said the ICT administration. “Operations will intensify in the coming weeks, particularly as the Eidul Azha holidays approach.”

Citizens have been urged to cooperate with the administration and refrain from setting up unauthorised stalls or engaging in activities that hinder public order. The administration reaffirmed its resolve to maintain Islamabad’s status as a clean, organized, and pedestrian-friendly city.

Authorities have also warned that repeat offenders will face heavier penalties, including fines and potential legal action. The ICT administration has established special monitoring teams to ensure continuous enforcement across all sectors, with a dedicated helpline for citizens to report illegal encroachments.
